Code of conduct

Be excellent to each other

Frontier Summit is a working conference for 1,200 people. Everyone deserves to learn, ask questions and hang out without being harassed. This code covers every space we run: the talks, the hallways, the closing party and our online channels.

Expected behaviour

  • Be kind and assume good faith. Everyone here is a working developer learning something.
  • Use the name and pronouns people give you.
  • Ask before you photograph someone, and stop when they say stop.
  • Make room in conversations. If a group is three people deep, open the circle.
  • Keep Q&A to questions. Save the long story for the hallway.
  • Follow directions from venue staff and the response team.

Unacceptable behaviour

  • Harassment, intimidation, stalking or following, in person or online.
  • Sexual language or imagery in talks, slides, stickers or conversation.
  • Unwelcome physical contact, or continuing to approach someone who has walked away.
  • Comments that demean someone's gender, race, age, disability, religion, background or body.
  • Recording or photographing someone after they have asked you not to.
  • Sustained disruption of a session, or threats of any kind.

Talks, slides and sponsors

Speakers keep slides and demos appropriate for a mixed audience of 1,200. Jokes at the expense of a group of people are out.

Sponsors and exhibitors follow the same code. Booth staff are briefed before doors open, and booth content is held to the same standard as the stage.

The closing party

Drinking is optional and never an excuse. The non-alcoholic bar is as well stocked as the other one, and nobody should have to explain why they are not drinking.

If you see someone who looks unwell or uncomfortable, check in with them or find an orange lanyard.

How to report

You do not need to be sure it is a violation. If something feels wrong, tell us and we will take it from there. You can report about something that happened to you or something you saw.

On site: find anyone wearing an orange lanyard, or go to the reporting desk on the mezzanine next to the quiet room, open 8:30 AM to 6:30 PM. You can also text the response team at (415) 555-0188, monitored from 8 AM to 11 PM on both days. After the event: email conduct@frontiersummit.dev.

What happens next

A member of the three-person response team will acknowledge your report within an hour at the event, or within two business days by email. We listen first, ask what you would like to happen and keep your report confidential.

Depending on what happened, we may give a warning, ask someone to leave without a refund, ban them from future events, or involve venue security and the police. The response team decides together, and nobody who is involved in an incident is part of the decision about it.
